Who
We Are
Sustainable Bolivia is a non-profit public benefit institution with offices in the United States and Cochabamba, Bolivia. With projects in the Andean highlands, our primary objective is to provide Bolivian organizations with much needed human and financial resources while providing international travelers, students and professionals the opportunity to gain practical work experience through internships and volunteer opportunities in Bolivia. Additionally, for those wishing to contribute and extend their stays in Bolivia, we offer a range of cultural and ecotourism excursions, home stay opportunities, low-cost housing, as well as Spanish and Quechua language classes.
Volunteer and Internship Opportunities
By working closely with local people, volunteers and interns will make a positive difference in the lives of Bolivians in Cochabamba and its surrounding areas. Opportunities include contributing to the development and implementation of one of Sustainable Bolivia’s projects, or placement within one of our 22 partner organizations. All of our volunteer placements match individual skills and interests to local needs in order to provide the most rewarding experience. Volunteers can contribute in a range of areas such as child and adult education, physiotherapy, orphan care, environmental conservation, healthcare, housing construction, and much more.
Sustainable Bolivia Language School
Sustainable Bolivia Language School provides high quality instruction for students of all levels and ages. Oriented towards socially and ecologically aware travelers, volunteers and interns, all of the profits from our language school are reinvested to help support the work of our foundation. According to our philosophy of promoting sustainable practices in rural and urban communities throughout Bolivia, our Spanish and Quechua teachers receive a sustainable salary, (over twice the going hourly wage), yet our prices are still lower than most language school operating in Cochabamba. Our philosophy facilitates a positive studying and working environment while allowing us to employ the most qualified teachers in Cochabamba.
Sustainable Bolivia Accommodations
Sustainable Bolivia offers a range of accommodations based on personal preferences and length of stay. We provide housing with local families as well as private and shared rooms centrally located in downtown Cochabamba’s cultural district and in the nearby countryside.
Sustainable Bolivia Ecotourism
Sustainable Bolivia assists indigenous communities develop their own environmentally, socially and fiscally sustainable community based ecotourism programs. These projects are owned, developed and run by local communities. Our primary function is to provide marketing assistance as well as technical and logistical support where necessary. Additionally we organize periodic small group travel and cultural excursions to various destinations throughout Cochabamba and Bolivia. These trips vary from week to week depending upon the interest of our students and volunteers, the time of year, and the availability of our guides.
Introduction
Despite its vast natural beauty and ancient cultural traditions,
Bolivia remains relatively unknown and unexplored when compared
to its other Andean counterparts. However, as travelers seek out
new, pristine and infrequently explored destinations, an increasing
number will come to learn of Bolivia and her many secrets. This
process will inevitably lead to an expansion of Bolivia’s international
tourist industry, which, if managed incorrectly, will cause irrevocable
environmental damage and provide little or no financial benefit
to the Bolivian people. Here at Sustainable Bolivia we seek to
counteract this process before it occurs. Through the promotion
of sustainable tourism, language studies and volunteer placement,
our mission is to provide the conscientious traveler a way to experience the immense natural and cultural wealth of Bolivia
in a way that is non-intrusive and environmentally, socially and
fiscally sustainable.
