The Commission for Bolivian Maritime Rights:
This project works with both the Bolivian government and non-governmental institutions to address issues related to Bolivian maritime rights. The Commission aims to include articles pertaining to maritime rights in the constitution and it oversees their implementation.
During the War of the Pacific (1879-83) Bolivia lost its access to the sea to Chile, and it has since been a sensitive diplomatic issue. Bolivia has resurrected claims to restore the Atacama corridor, which have been rejected by Chile, offering instead unlimited but not sovereign maritime access through the country, in exchange for Bolivian natural gas and other commodities. Projects supported by the Commission include a permanent forum on Bolivian maritime issues, constant assessment of the international relations between Bolivia, Chile and Peru, and various research projects.
